NEWPORT COAST, Calif. -- Augusta State fashioned the best round of the day Tuesday and moved up to third place during the third and final round of the Battle At The Beach at Pelican Hill Golf Club's Ocean North Course.
The tournament, in its second year of existence, featured a play-six, count-five format.
The No. 14 Jaguars carded a 1-over 351 that featured a pair of 2-under 68's from All-Americans Henrik Norlander and Patrick Reed. Senior Olle Bengtsson notched a 1-over 71 and fellow seniors Mitch Krywulycz and Carter Newman pitched in a pair of 2-over 72's. Freshman Alex Wennstam, in his first collegiate appearance, settled for a 6-over 76 and had the day's non-counting score.
Reed tied for third place at 4-under 206 (72-66-68), just three strokes back of medalist Kenneth McCready of San Diego. Krywulycz was 10th at 2-over 213 (67-74-72), Norlander was 17th at 6-over 216 (71-77-68), Newman (73-74-72) and Wennstam (69-74-76) shared 35th at 9-over 219 and Bengtsson (71-81-71) tied for 52nd at 13-over 223.
UCLA matched the Jaguars' 1-over 351 and overtook 36-hole leader San Diego for the team title. The Toreros, ASU, Washington and Arizona State rounded out the top five.
McCready clipped UCLA's Patrick Cantlay by two shots for medalist honors, while ASU's Reed and UCLA's Connor Driscoll shared third. San Diego State's J.J. Spaun finished alone in fifth place.
The Jags are back in action March 13-14 in the General Jim Hackler Invitational at TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C.
