SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Augusta State combined for a 5-over 355 Saturday during the first round of the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate at famed Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The tournament, which features a play-six, count-five format, was slated for 36 holes Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Play was delayed Saturday for nearly two hours due to fog and, as a result, none of the 15-team field was able to complete their second rounds.
The Jaguars, who played alongside third-ranked UCLA, are tied for fourth and eight shots back of the Bruins (347/-3). San Diego State and California are tied for second at 354/+4, while the No. 7 Jags are one back in a tie for fourth with Arizona State.
Individually, the Jags were paced by junior Patrick Reed's 4-under 66. He is tied for third and just a single stroke off the lead of California's Jeff Hamm and UCLA's Pontus Widegren. Mitch Krywulycz notched a 1-over 71 and is 16th, while Carter Newman and Henrik Norlander signed for a pair of 2-over 72's and are tied for 22nd. Freshman Alex Wennstam managed a 4-over 74 and is 44th and Olle Bengtsson turned in a 77 and is tied for 67th.
The second round is scheduled to resume at 11:00 a.m., EST, weather permitting, with a resumption of round 2. Barring any further delays, the second round is slated to finish around 1:00 p.m. EST, with continuous play into round three.
If there is another fog delay, tournament officials will decide if the event goes beyond 36 holes.
