SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Augusta State finished in a tie for third Sunday at the conclusion of the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate at historic Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The Jaguars completed their second round Sunday morning, posting a 7-over 357. ASU then went out and combined for a final-round 364 on the picturesque and challenging, par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo layout. With the tie for third, ASU tallied its sixth top-three finish of the season and seventh top-five effort.
Junior Patrick Reed (66-75-68) shot a 2-under 68, the second-lowest round by the entire field, and paced the No. 7 Jags with a tie for second place at 1-under 209. Senior Henrik Norlander (72-70-71) booked a 1-over 71 and tied for ninth at 3-over 213, while fellow senior Carter Newman (72-70-74) tied for 19th at 6-over 216 after a final-round 74.
Senior Mitch Krywulycz (71-71-76) just missed a top-20, tying for 25th at 8-over 218. Senior Olle Bengtsson was 61st at 226 (77-71-78) and freshman Alex Wennstam (74-84-75) was 78th at 233.
Third-ranked UCLA picked up its third win of the season and first of the spring and New Mexico State senior Tim Madigan (69-68-70) claimed medalist honors at 3-under 207. No. 20 Southern California was second, No. 26 Oregon tied the Jags for third and No. 5 San Diego State was fifth while tourney host San Jose State was sixth.
The tournament, which featured a 15-team field that included nine teams in the top-30, used a play-six, count-five format.
The event marked the end of ASU's regular-season schedule. The Jags will now await an at-large selection to the NCAA postseason and will begin preparations for the NCAA Regionals, slated for Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21.
