Jaguars Open Title Defense Thursday

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State begins the official defense of its 2010 National Championship when the Jaguars tee off Thursday morning in the NCAA Florida Regional at Golden Ocala Golf Club in Ocala, Fla.

The Jaguars, who enter the postseason ranked No. 6 in the country by Golfstat and No. 7 by both Golfweek and GolfWorld magazines, will be the No. 2 seed in the three-day, 54-hole regional, which will be hosted by the University of Florida and runs through Saturday, May 21.

The Jaguars earned a postseason bid Monday, May 9 when the Jaguars received an at-large selection by the NCAA Men's Golf Committee in Indianapolis, Ind. ASU will be making its 13th regional appearance in the last 14 years, and its 16th in the last 19 years.

ASU will be paired with the regional's top seed and host, Florida, along with third-seeded Arkansas. Senior Henrik Norlander will lead off for the Jags Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m., followed by junior Patrick Reed at 8:10, senior Olle Bengtsson at 8:20 and senior Carter Newman at 8:30, with senior Mitch Krywulycz anchoring the lineup at 8:40 a.m.

Designed by Ron Garl, Golden Ocala Golf Club (www.goldenocala.com) originally opened in 1986 and is located between Gainesville and Orlando and only 15 minutes from downtown Ocala. The course was named of America's Top 100 Residential Golf Courses by Golfweek from 2004 to 2007. Other accolades include being selected as the "Best Replica Course in the U.S." by Travel and Leisure in 2004. The course was also named to the Best in State of Florida list by Golf Digest in 2007.

ASU will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in 16 NCAA Regional appearances. A total of 81 teams were invited to six regional sites. The top five teams from each regional, well as the low individual not a member of those teams, will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.

For the third straight year, the NCAA's modified format for the postseason features six regionals around the nation. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.

Live scoring of each of the six NCAA regionals will be available at www.golfstat.com.

Augusta State captured the 2010 National Championship at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., in an epic final match with 10-time National Champion Oklahoma State. The Jaguars defeated the top three seeds in match play on consecutive days, dispatching Georgia Tech (3-2), Florida State (4-1) and OSU (3-1-1).

ASU's Mitch Krywulycz rallied for a 4-down deficit to stun the Cowboys' Kevin Tway in 19 holes and win the clinching point for the Jags.  Henrik Norlander and Patrick Reed accounted for ASU's other points in the championship match and earned the Jags their first national title in any varsity sport.
