Jaguars Roar Back At Regional

OCALA, Fla. -- Augusta State fired a 13-under 275 Friday -- the low round of the day by six shots – during the second round of the NCAA Southeast-Florida Regional at Golden Ocala Golf Club.

At 11-under 565 (290-275), the No. 6 Jaguars moved out to a four-stroke lead over both Florida and North Carolina State. Arkansas and Baylor are five shots off the pace and tied for fourth, while Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State share sixth place, six strokes back of ASU.

The Jags, who began the day in eighth place and eight shots off the lead, got off to a quick start, playing the first three holes in six-under. Patrick Reed paced the squad with a 5-under 67, while Carter Newman and Olle Bengtsson carded a pair of 3-under 69's. Henrik Norlander turned in a 2-under 70 and Mitch Krywulcyz rebounded with a 1-over 73.

"It's just what we do," Gregory said to Golfweek magazine writer Ryan Lavner, in reference to Thursday's 2-over 290 in the opening round. "We're a terrible first-round team. It's hard, though, when you haven't competed in more than a month, and all the expectations and all the pressures in the world being the defending champions, and you come to regionals with, really, a not-a-whole-lot-to-gain mindset, other than the opportunity to win."

Reed's effort moved him into a tie for seventh at 5-under 139, while Newman (4-under 140) and Norlander (3-under 141) are tied for 10th and 14th, respectively. Bengtsson, playing in his first NCAA Regional is tied for 29th at 1-over 145, while Krywulycz is 67th.

North Carolina State's Mitchell Sutton fashioned a 5-under 67 and at 9-under 135, will take a one-stroke lead into tomorrow's third and final round. Southeastern Louisiana's Philipp Westermann is a shot back at 8-under 136 and Notre Dame's Niall Platt is two off the lead at 7-under 137. Central Florida's Greg Eason and Kennesaw State's Ben Greene are tied for fourth at 6-under 136. Oregon's Jake Dukeminier, the overnight individual leader following a 6-under 66, managed a 4-over 76 and slipped to 17th.

ASU will be paired with Florida and North Carolina State on Saturday, with Krywulycz leading off for the Jags on No. 1 at 8:40 a.m. Bengtsson follows at 8:50, with Norlander going at 9:00, Newman at 9:10 and Reed at 9:20.
