OCALA, Fla. -- Augusta State carded a 1-under 287 Saturday in the third and final round of the NCAA Southeast-Florida Regional at Golden Ocala Golf Club.
The sixth-ranked Jaguars finished as the runnerup in the regional to Florida. The Gators, who began the day four shots behind ASU, combined for a 11-under 287 to post a six-shot victory. Kennesaw State, North Carolina State and Arkansas finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.
Jaguar junior Patrick Reed fired his second consecutive 5-under 67 to earn a share of medalist honors at 10-under 206 with North Carolina State's Mitchell Sutton and Missouri's Jace Long, who shot a 10-under 62. The victory is Reed's first of the season and second of his collegiate career.
The victory is also the second for an ASU individual at the NCAA Regionals. Former All-American Kalle Edberg won the NCAA Central Regional in 2005 at the Warren Course in Notre Dame, Ind., with a 54-hole total of 5-under 205 while leading the Jags to the team title as well.
Henrik Norlander had an even-par 72 and tied for 14th at 3-under 213. Carter Newman signed for a 3-over 75 and tied for 21st at 1-under 215. Olle Bengtsson managed a 4-over 76 and tied for 42nd at 5-over 221, while Mitch Krywulycz turned in his second straight, 1-over 73 and tied for 64th at 12-over 228.
With their finish, ASU will advance to the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in 16 NCAA Regional appearances. A total of 81 teams were invited to six regional sites, with the top five from each regional advancing. The NCAA Championships are slated for May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
"We definitely wanted the 'W' but finishing second in the regional worked out pretty well for us last year," said ASU head coach Josh Gregory. "We set a goal at the beginning of the year and we accomplished our first goal of the season. We can't wait to get to Stillwater and tee it up. It'll be a lot of fun and a great experience for our team."
Florida's Andres Echavarria (9-under 207) and Southeastern Louisiana's Rhys West (8-under 208) were fourth and fifth, individually.
