Jaguars Are Elite Again!

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Augusta State qualified for the match play portion of the NCAA Championships for the second straight year late Thursday afternoon when the Jaguars finished seventh in the third and final round of stroke play at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

On a day when not a single player in the 156-man field, broke 70, junior Patrick Reed carded a 1-under 71 and made a key par on the par-5 ninth hole, ASU's last hole of the day, to seal the Jags' berth in match play.

ASU will be the No. 7 seed and is set to take on second-seeded Georgia Tech at 12:30 p.m. (EST) Friday afternoon. Olle Bengtsson will take on Richy Werenski at 12:30 p.m., followed by Carter Newman vs. Paul Haley at 12:39, Mitch Krywulycz vs. Kyle Scott at 12:48, Henrik Norlander vs. J.T. Griffin at 12:57 and Reed vs. James White at 1:06. The pairings are based on Golfstat's individual rankings.

The match between the Jags and Yellow Jackets will be a rematch of last year's quarterfinals at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. ASU won that match 3-2 behind victories from Reed, Norlander and Newman.

Reed's effort lifted him into a tie for third, and at the conclusion of play, he was named a first-team All-American by the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America). He became the second first-team All-American in school history and the first selection since Oliver Wilson earned first-team honors at the conclusion of the 2001-02 season.

The Jags, who began the day in seventh place at 12-over 588, combined for a 12-over 300 in difficult playing conditions with sustained winds up to 23 mph. On a day when the average score was 76.8, Newman posted a 3-over 75, Norlander signed for a 4-over 76 and Krywulycz turned in a 78. Bengtsson had the day's non-counting score with an 82.

UCLA overtook Georgia Tech with a 298 and finished three shots ahead of the Yellow Jackets to earn the top seed in match play. Tourney host Oklahoma State tied for third with Illinois and will be the No. 3 seed, while the Illini will be seeded fourth.

Georgia was fifth and will face Illinois in match play, while Ohio State was sixth, one stroke clear ASU. The Buckeyes will meet OSU, while Duke finished eighth and will take on UCLA.

LSU's John Peterson claimed medalist honors, firing a back-nine 32 to finish at even for the day and tally a 54-hole total of 5-under 211. UCLA's Patrick Cantlay, the Phil Mickelson Award winner as the national Freshman of the Year, finished alone in second while ASU's Reed was part of a five-way tie for third.

ASU is making its 12th appearance in the NCAA Championships in the last 19 years. Only a dozen other men's college golf programs in the nation can claim more appearances in that span than the Jags.

Tickets are $50 for an All-Session badge which covers all six days of competition. Any-session badges are available for $10. There is no charge for children 12 and under.
