AUGUSTA, Ga – The Augusta University women's basketball team split its two season-opening games in the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Crossover. The Jaguars won their contest against Southern Wesleyan prior to falling to Barton on Saturday.
GAME 1
Augusta downed Southern Wesleyan 75-50, shooting 44.9 % from the field. They held the Warriors' to 18-56 from the field and 4-24 from beyond the arc.
AU got off to a hot start, ending the first quarter leading 26-9. They wouldn't relinquish the lead for the entirety of the game and led by as many as 21 points in the first half.
Kennedi Manning led Augusta in their first outing of the season, scoring 16 points to go along with 7 rebounds. Senior
Zairya West was also in double-digits points, scoring 13 while going 5-for-8 from the field.
Autumn Phillips also matched that offensive effort with 13 points of her own.
GAME 2
Barton handed AU its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon.
Augusta got off to a slow offensive start in its second game of the crossover. Barton's inside presence helped extend a 35-11 lead in the second quarter. The Jags rebounded well in the second half, but were unable to close the deficit and fell 83-61 to a strong Bulldog squad. Second chance points proved to be the difference maker, with Barton outscoring AU 17-2.
Augusta was balanced offensively in the effort.
Kennedi Manning carded her second game leading the home team with 12 points.
Autumn Phillips added 11 points and 2 assists. 7 different Jaguars had 7 points in the loss.
Augusta went 22-for-45 from the field and shot 50% from beyond the arc.
Barton was led by Shanika Peterkin's 26 points and Akira Wiggins 22 points.
