Jaguar Student-Athletes Pitch In at Augusta Ironman

AUGUSTA, Ga –Last Sunday, Augusta University student-athletes spent time volunteering at the IRONMAN® 70.3® race.  The IRONMAN® 70.3® Augusta is a triathlon that consists of a 1.2-mile down-current swim in the Savannah River, a 56-mile bike ride and finishes with a 13.1-mile run throughout downtown Augusta, adding up to 70.3 miles of total racing.

The AU women's basketball team, men's basketball team, and volleyball team all spent their Sunday helping facilitate the successful race.

Women's basketball acted as Bike Aid Station 1. The team set up tables to provide refreshments for participants during the biking segment of the triathlon. Preparation included opening bottles of water and Gatorade, filling kid pools with ice to chill drinks, and cutting bananas. As the participants rode by, the team had refreshments in hand for them to grab and continue.

Men's basketball acted as the 'Green Team' during the event. The team spent the day picking up and disposing of trash along the entire bike path as well as the run path.

Volleyball acted as swim spotters for the first event of the day. The players were responsible for notifying lifeguards if they spotted swimmers in distress or in need of assistance.
