FLORENCE, S.C.- The Augusta women's basketball team fell to Francis Marion on the road Wednesday night 61-60 for their first loss of the year. The Jaguars are now 4-1 overall while the Patriots are 3-1.
This one came down to the final four minutes of the game as Augusta led 58-57 with just over three minutes to play. The Patriots would take the lead 59-58 and would hold on for the victory. The Jags had a couple of chances in the final minute but
Brianna Meekins shot was off the mark with 25 seconds left that would have given AU the lead. FMU then hit a pair of free throws to make it 61-58. Freeman would hit a pair of free throws with five seconds to play making it a one point game. The Jaguars would get one more chance but a last second shot would be off the mark.
Mone Florence led Augusta with 16 points.
Tyasia Freeman netted 12 points and
Nyaneit Puok finished with 11 points on three three pointers and a pair of free throws.
Augusta struggled in the opening quarter and fell behind 21-13. They would quickly get things going with Puok hitting all three of her three pointers in the quarter as they outscored FMU 21-11 to take a two point lead at the half.
The Jags would score the first nine points of the third quarter to extend the lead, only to see FMU rattle off nine straight to get right back into the ballgame. AU led 47-44 after the third setting up for the back and fourth final quarter.
Augusta shot just 37.3% for the game while Francis Marion shot 41.5%. The Jaguars were also out rebounded 37-32 with
Quinasia Abercrombie lead AU with seven boards.
The Jaguars return to Christenberry Fieldhouse on Saturday, Nov. 23 for a 1:30 p.m. game against Belmont Abbey.
