AUGUSTA, GA — As part of Augusta University's annual alumni weekend, Distinguished Alumni and Outstanding Young Alumni in each college and Athletics are honored. Former baseball player Carey Tankersley was honored as the 2024 Distinguished Alumnus for Athletics.
Tankersley graduated from Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences with his Bachelor of Arts in History degree in 1972. During his time at AU, Carey was a four-year letterman baseball player. He was named Most Valuable Player for his team in 1970 and received the Sportsmanship Award in 1972. Carey had the highest batting average and hits among his team. He is a proud Jaguar and served as CSRA Chairman of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as The Augusta Futurity's Committee Chairman for two decades. Carey was elected to the Columbia County Board of Education in 1980 and served as the Chairman from 1981-1983. He married an AU alumna who also graduated from Pamplin College, Susan Foster, and together they have three children; Ann, Mollie and Ben.
