Joey McGown will begin his 1st season with Augusta University in 2022. The Alcoa, Tennessee native comes to Augusta University after serving as the pitching coach, outfield coach, and recruiting assistant at UVA Wise in Wise, VA. McCown helped with the development of Gabe Wurtz (Tucson Saguaros Pecos League) and Tyler Blaum (Juliet Slammers Frontier League), two of UVA Wise’s players that were picked up after the 2021 season concluded.

Prior to Augusta University baseball, McCown started his coaching career as a pitching coach for the varsity and junior varsity baseball programs at Alcoa High School. From there he served as the pitching coach at Maryville College from 2011 to 2013. In 2013, McCown was head coach of the Rowan Patriots of the All American Collegiate Baseball League in Salisbury, North Carolina. During his time there, he led the Patriots to a league championship while also posting a 24-7 record.

McCown then served as the graduate assistant at Lincoln Memorial University where he was the bullpen coach, outfield coach, first base coach, and recruiting assistant. McCown was a part of the 2018 conference championship season and two regional appearances with LMU (2018 and 2019). McCown also helped in the development of Ethan Elliott, 10th round pick of the Padres, Matt Mullenbach, a free agent sign of the New York Mets, and Christopher Salvey with the West Virginia Power.

Prior to starting his coaching career, McCown pitched at East Tennessee State University under then head coach Tony Skole from 2004-2007 and at King University under head coach Mark Conkin during the 2008 season. McCown received a bachelor’s degree in sport management from East Tennessee State University in 2009 and a master’s degree in business administration from Lincoln Memorial University in 2019. Joey McCown resides in Augusta with his wife Dr. Melanie McCown and 6 year old boxer Denali.
