AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Lander battled back from an early deficit Saturday afternoon to
earn a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State in
Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The win clinched a share of second place in the PBC for Lander
while the contest marked the end of the regular season for both
squads. The Bearcats improved to 21-10 overall and 7-3 in the PBC
while ASU dropped to 14-20 and 3-7, respectively.
The Jaguars claimed the first set 25-22 before Lander battled back
with a 25-22 win in the second set. The visitors took a 2-1 lead
with a 25-22 win in the third set and closed out the match with a
25-16 win in the fourth set.
ASU freshman Jessica Hanson racked up a match-high 19 kills against
just four errors. Junior Jessica Howard booked 17 kills and five
blocks, while junior Lindsey Weider notched a team-high 20 digs and
freshman setter Ashley Zappitell had 47 assists. Senior Amy Hunt,
playing in her final contest in Christentberry Fieldhouse, managed
nine kills and four digs.
Lander's Kerri Sorensen (18 kills, 13 assists) and Magi
Nottingham (14 kills, 12 digs) each posted a double-double, while
Kay Stewart matched Sorensen with 18 kills. Current PBC
Specialist-of-the-Week Candace LaRocca tallied 59 assists and added
13 digs of her own.
The Peach Belt Conference Tournament is slated for Nov. 15-16 in
Pembroke, N.C. ASU will be the No. 5 seed and will take on
fourth-seeded USC Aiken on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1:00 p.m. Lander
will be the third seed and will face off against No. 6 seed UNC
Pembroke at 11:00 a.m.
