ASU Earns Split

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Augusta State split a pair of matches on the first day of the Carson-Newman Labor Day Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Jags now 1-1 on the season, fell 3-0 in their season opener to Carson-Newman, but came back with a 3-1 victory over Lees-McRae.

Junior Jessica Howard led the team with 10 kills and two solo blocks against the Eagles, while senior Amy Hunt added eight kills.

Junior Kelsey Fleck led the Eagles with 10 kills, while junior Katie Troyer posted seven kills and three blocks.

In the second match against Lees-McRae, Howard paced the Jags with 13 kills, while freshman Ashley Zappitell posted a double-double with 31 assists and 21 digs and racked up four service aces.

The Jaguars wrap up the Carson-Newman Labor Day Tournament Saturday afternoon with a pair of matches, the first at noon against Mount Olive, and the second against West Virginia Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
