MARIETTA, Ga.
– Augusta State's Fred Brathwaite scored a game-high 23
points and pulled down a career-best 17 rebounds to lead the
Jaguars to an 81-68 road victory over Life Wednesday night.
With the victory, No. 6 ASU improved to 3-0 on the season. The
Runnin' Eagles, the 23rd ranked team in the nation in NAIA,
dropped to 6-3 with the loss. The contest marked the first meeting
between the Jags and Life since Jan. 29, 2001.
The double-double effort was the second in as many games for
Brathwaite, a senior guard/forward from Columbus, Ga., and the
reigning Peach Belt Conference Player-of-the-Week. Senior guard Ben
Madgen posted 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Senior
forward Alex Smith booked 15 points and six boards while senior
point guard Daniel Dixon added 11 points and three assists.
ASU dominated on the glass, claiming a 55-31 rebounding advantage.
In fact, the Jags registered as many offensive rebounds as the
Runnin' Eagles managed on the defensive end.
The Jags shot 45 percent in the game and limited Life just 33
percent shooting from the field, including just 25 percent in the
second half. ASU connected on just two 3-pointers, both by Dixon,
but went 31-of-46 at the freethrow line. The Jags owned a 36-20
advantage in points in the paint.
In a game that featured five ties and 11 lead changes, ASU led by
as much as 15 at the 10:09 mark of the second half.
The Jags host Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference matchup Saturday
afternoon at 4:00 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
