Madgen Pours In 30 At UNCP

PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Augusta State junior guard Ben Madgen poured in 30 points Wednesday night to lift the 11th-ranked Jaguars to a 74-69 Peach Belt Conference win over UNC Pembroke in front of a crowd of 1,182 in the Jones Center.

The victory improved ASU to 16-4 overall and to 10-3 in the Peach Belt Conference, while UNCP slipped to 6-14 and 3-10 in the league.

The victory was ASU's 13th consecutive win over the Braves and gave head coach Dip Metress his 101st win at the helm of the Jags' program. With the win, ASU matched last season's squad for the third-best record in school history through the first 20 games of the season.

Madgen enjoyed his second 30-point game of the season, bested only by his 33-point effort vs. USC Aiken on Jan. 5. He connected on 7-of-14 field-goal attempts, including four 3-pointers, and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Fred Brathwaite booked 15 points and sophomore guard Caleb Brown had 12 points off the bench. Senior center Garret Siler managed 10 points before fouling out along with starting forward Greg Hire.

Marcus Heath was one of four Braves in double figures, finishing with 17 points and adding five assists. Cortez Brown turned in 15 points and Brandon Thomas and David Moore chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Jags shot 67 percent in the first half en route to a 42-30 halftime lead. The Braves battled back in the second half, hitting at a 54 percent clip to grab a three-point lead with 11:27 remaining.

ASU countered with a 14-1 run that included a 3-pointer from Madgen and Brathwaite. After two free throws from Hire, Brown scored eight straight points, including consecutive treys to put the Jags ahead 64-54 with 6:51 to play.

The Braves twice rallied to get within three. On both occasions, Brathwaite drained a pair of free throws to slow down the UNCP charge. His pair from the charity stripe with seven seconds left accounted for the final margin.

The contest marked the end of a three-game road swing for the Jaguars, who return to Christenberry Fieldhouse to host PBC rival Clayton State on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
