CARROLLTON, Ga. -- Augusta State used a 10-0 run in the second half to pull away from West Georgia and register a 70-61 non-conference victory over the Lady Wolves Monday night in The Coliseum.
The win lifted the Lady Jaguars to 6-2 overall, while UWG slipped to 1-8 on the season.
In its first season under head coach Nate Teymer, the ASU women's basketball program matched its win total from the last two seasons combined (5-23 in 2008-09 and 1-26 in 2009-10).
Senior Briyana Evans sparked the Lady Jags with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Peach Belt Conference Player Of The Week Blaire Egardo tallied 13 points and five steals while freshman Brooke McCants canned three 3-pointers and notched a career-high 11 points. Fellow freshman Jemimah Ashby added 10 points.
Monica Williams booked a game-high 20 points and 15 rebounds for West Georgia. Breonna Mosley netted 14 points and 10 boards and Thomassian Wyatt added 13 points.
ASU fell behind by five early on before battling back when Brooke McCants' 3-pointer gave the guests a 17-13 advantage at the 10:08 mark. A 3-point play from Evans with 33 seconds left put ASU in front 29-27 at the half.
The Lady Wolves took a 38-37 lead at the 16:45 mark of the second half on a Williams' trey before ASU answered with 10 straight points. Ashby capped the spurt with a 3-point play with 13:41 to go for a nine-point lead.
UWG pulled within five on two occasions, the last with 6:33 left on a Moseley layup. ASU answered when McCants drilled back-to-back treys and a pair of free throws from her gave ASU its biggest lead -- 66-54 -- with 4:11 to go.
The Lady Jags, who committed a season-low 13 turnovers, shot 45.9 percent overall and forced 22 Lady Wolves' turnovers.
ASU takes on sixth-ranked and undefeated Clayton State (9-0, 1-0) in a Peach Belt Conference matchup on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m., in Morrow, Ga.
