AIKEN, S.C. -
Montevallo shot a season-high 65 percent from the floor and the
Falcons pulled off an 81-77 upset of top-ranked Augusta State
Saturday in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Men's
Basketball Championship in the USC Aiken Convocation Center.
The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak and dropped the Jags to
26-3 on the season. The Falcons, in their first year in the PBC,
improve to 23-6 and advance to the tournament title game on
Saturday at 4:30 p.m., against either USC Aiken or Clayton
State.
Senior guard Ben Madgen, the PBC's all-time scoring leader,
registered a career-high 34 points and connected on 12-of-17 shots,
including a career-best seven 3-pointers. Senior forward Fred
Brathwaite 20 points and hauled down 14 rebounds for his seventh
double-double of the season.
Montevallo's Freddy Little scored 17 points before fouling
out and Cecil Coleman added 13 points, while Gerald January tallied
nine points and 10 rebounds.
ASU will now await Sunday night's announcement of the NCAA
Tournament field, slated for 9:30 p.m., at www.ncaa.com. The Jaguars will
host a selection show viewing at the Jaguar Student Activities
Center (JSAC) beginning at 9:00 p.m.
The Jaguars took an early five-point lead, but Montevallo rallied
to take a 24-23 lead on a jumper by January. The Falcons pushed
their lead to double digits and took a 45-36 advantage in the half.
Montevallo shot a sizzling 70.8 percent (17-of-24) from the field
over the opening 20 minutes.
The Falcons went up 54-42 following a technical foul shot with
16:25 remaining in the second half. ASU responded with a 12-0 run
to tie the game. Franck Ndongo capped the run with a layup at the
11:35 mark.
With 3:08 left and the score deadlocked at 66-66. Montevallo
rattled off a 9-3 spurt to go up 75-69 with 1:10 on the clock. A
Madgen trey cut the deficit in half (75-72) with 59 ticks left.
With Montevallo owning a 76-72 lead and 41 seconds remaining,
Dortch went to the free throw line. He made the first shot, missed
the second attempt, but grabbed his own rebound and converted the
layup to put the Falcons up 79-72.
ASU shot 50 percent in the second half and 46.9 percent for the
game. The Jags, who rank third in the PBC and 38th overall in
free-throw shooting, connected on just 10-of-17 attempts from the
charity stripe (58.8 percent).
The loss dropped ASU to 5-6 all-time in PBC Tourney semifinal games
and to 3-5 in the Convocation Center since the venue opened for the
2007-08 season. The Jags are now 18-8 in the month of March under
head coach Dip Metress and 17-8 in the postseason over his six
seasons at the helm of the Jags.
