AIKEN, S.C. - Montevallo shot a season-high 65 percent from the floor and the Falcons pulled off an 81-77 upset of top-ranked Augusta State Saturday in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball Championship in the USC Aiken Convocation Center.

The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak and dropped the Jags to 26-3 on the season. The Falcons, in their first year in the PBC, improve to 23-6 and advance to the tournament title game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., against either USC Aiken or Clayton State.

Senior guard Ben Madgen, the PBC's all-time scoring leader, registered a career-high 34 points and connected on 12-of-17 shots, including a career-best seven 3-pointers. Senior forward Fred Brathwaite 20 points and hauled down 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.

ASU will now await Sunday night's announcement of the NCAA Tournament field, slated for 9:30 p.m., at www.ncaa.com.  The Jaguars will host a selection show viewing at the Jaguar Student Activities Center (JSAC) beginning at 9:00 p.m.

The Jaguars took an early five-point lead, but Montevallo rallied to take a 24-23 lead on a jumper by January. The Falcons pushed their lead to double digits and took a 45-36 advantage in the half. Montevallo shot a sizzling 70.8 percent (17-of-24) from the field over the opening 20 minutes.

The Falcons went up 54-42 following a technical foul shot with 16:25 remaining in the second half. ASU responded with a 12-0 run to tie the game. Franck Ndongo capped the run with a layup at the 11:35 mark.

With 3:08 left and the score deadlocked at 66-66. Montevallo rattled off a 9-3 spurt to go up 75-69 with 1:10 on the clock. A Madgen trey cut the deficit in half (75-72) with 59 ticks left. With Montevallo owning a 76-72 lead and 41 seconds remaining, Dortch went to the free throw line. He made the first shot, missed the second attempt, but grabbed his own rebound and converted the layup to put the Falcons up 79-72.

ASU shot 50 percent in the second half and 46.9 percent for the game. The Jags, who rank third in the PBC and 38th overall in free-throw shooting, connected on just 10-of-17 attempts from the charity stripe (58.8 percent).

The loss dropped ASU to 5-6 all-time in PBC Tourney semifinal games and to 3-5 in the Convocation Center since the venue opened for the 2007-08 season. The Jags are now 18-8 in the month of March under head coach Dip Metress and 17-8 in the postseason over his six seasons at the helm of the Jags.
