VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State opened its 2011 season Friday with a 1-1 record on day one of the Wingate by Wyndham Azalea Classic, hosted by Valdosta State at The Complex.
In the opener vs. Valdosta State, the Jaguars rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the fourth set 25-20 before the Blazers outpointed ASU 15-10 in the fifth set to take the match, 3-2.
ASU freshman Alex Rohlfing booked a double-double in her first collegiate match, netting a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs. Junior setter Krystin Wahlig had 43 assists and freshman libero Collette Richards turned in a team-best 18 digs. Freshman Kristin Koch added five service aces and freshman Paige Tuttle notched seven block assists.
The Jags bounced back in the afternoon, sweeping Albany State 3-0 behind a match-high 14 kills from Rohlfing. Koch and Mandy Irizarry added nine and six kills, respectively. Wahlig and freshman setter Lauren Alverson combined for 31 assists. Led by Rohlfing's .407 attack percentage, the Jags posted a .293 mark as a team.
ASU takes on Barry (Fla.) and Fort Valley State (Ga.) Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m., respectively, in the second and final day of the tournament.
