Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. -- Augusta State jumped out to a 15-point, first-half lead Thursday night at West Georgia and went on to claim a 61-48 non-conference road win over the Wolves at The Coliseum.
A pair of newcomers led the way for the Lady Jaguars, who improved to 2-0 with the win. Senior forward Taylor Ayers, a transfer from Virginia Tech originally from Augusta, came off the bench to register a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Junior point guard Tanchelle Hollingsworth, a junior-college transfer from Raytown, Mo., nailed three 3-pointers and tallied 13 points and five assists.
The Lady Jags, who never trailed, used a 5-0 spurt that Hollingsworth capped with a trey to grab a 19-6 advantage at the 7:48 mark of the first half. An Ayers' jumper put ASU up by as much as 15 with 3:46 to play in the half and her jumper with 15 seconds left gave the Lady Jags a 28-13 lead at the break.
Augusta moved out to its largest lead of the game just 2:44 into the second half when a jumper from Brooke McCants staked the Lady Jags to a 35-18 advantage. UWG (2-1) closed to within 41-33 with 11:28 left before ASU countered with six in a row. A layup from Eryka Menzies pushed the lead back to 47-33 and West Georgia never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
The Lady Jags shot 40.0 percent from the field and grabbed 45 rebounds compared to 38 for UWG. ASU forced 20 turnovers and limited the Wolves to 29.1 percent shooting, including just 16.7 percent in the first half.
The Lady Jags make their home debut on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they host Claflin at 5:30 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
