Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Keshun Sherrill lobbed a pass to the right of the bucket over a Tusculum defender's arms, and Harold Doby slammed the ball home to highlight a 90-80 Georgia Regents victory that was never in doubt.
The Jaguars started off in style, quickly getting off to a 5-0 lead as Ronell Crockett's spin-back jumper from the right baseline fell for GRU's first bucket of the season. They opened up leads of 13-5 and 18-10 early, before back-to-back threes by BJ Fisher pulled the Pioneers within three, but Keshun Sherill answered with a trey before Weems canned another from the right corner.
"We used our size well," head coach Dip Metress said. "We rebounded the basketball and got some free throws. I'm happy to get a win."
Nine different Jags scored in the first half, propelling GRU to a 43-30 halftime lead. The Pioneers kept battling, cutting the lead to single digits with 2:33 left, but got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Doby exerted his will all night, dropping 27 points with 13 rebounds as he posted his eighth double-double in a Jaguar uniform. Weems added 15, hitting 5-of-12 shots on the night, and the other three starters (KJ Sherill, Keshun Sherill, Ronell Crockett) all scored in double figures. It marked the first game where the Jags scored 90 points since last season.
It capped a fast-paced first day in the Peach Belt Conference/South Atlantic Conference challenge hosted by Health Center Credit Union.
In the first game, Lander and Anderson swapped the lead throughout, even down to the final minute. Chandler Hash's three-ball with 20 seconds left pulled Anderson (1-0) within one, and after a missed Bearcat (0-1) free throw, Myson Jones hit two free throws with 5 seconds remaining to seal it for Anderson. Hash led all scorers with 18 points for Anderson, which forced 17 turnovers to offset a good Lander shooting night.
GRU returns to the hardwood tomorrow night when they face Anderson at 4:00 p.m. to wrap up the HCCU PBC-SAC Challenge
