Jags Climb From Deficit To Beat Braves

AUGUSTA, Ga. –GRU Augusta bounced back from a tough loss against Francis Marion in order to complete a comeback performance against UNC Pembroke for a 63-54 victory Sunday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

In the opening minutes both women's squads struggled to score a basket until UNCP nailed back-to-back three-pointers.

GRU's shooting woes continued through the first half as they went 7-for-32 from the field, but quickly found its strength by knocking down treys. Behind its success from downtown, shooting 42 percent in first half from beyond the arc, UNCP was able open to lead by as many as 10 points.

The Braves continued to fight and narrowed the deficit to seven points at 19-26 following the put-back by senior wing player Jemimah Ashby as time expired in the first half.

In the second half the UNCP would lead by as many as 13 points until Ashby decided to take control, scoring 17 of her 19 points during the last 20 minutes. She posted the game high in points to lead the Jags to the comeback win.

Along with help from senior guards Becky Newhouse and Brooke McCants, the Jags were able to scratch and claw their way back into the game. Newhouse recorded 14 points while McCants contributed eight points respectively.

It was not until less than four minutes remained in the matchup before the Jags were able to tie the game and take the lead at 56-54 with an open three-pointer and two clutch free throws by Ashby.

The Jags return next Saturday, Jan. 11 to play at Armstrong for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
