Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – In their home opener of the 2014-15 season, the GRU Augusta women's basketball team lost their second straight to Limestone on Friday evening, 70-50, in a non-conference contest at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
After coming up short in a 93-82 overtime loss to Benedict on the road, the Jaguars (0-2) struggled to keep up with the No. 11 nationally ranked Saints (3-1) in the second half.
The match started off as a tight battle in the first half. The Jaguars struck first with a two-pointer from senior Kelsey Fynaardt, and the Saints responded quickly by canning a three-pointer. For the majority of the first half he Saints held the lead, but the Jaguars kept the score differential within five.
At the 2:45 mark, junior forward Kariel Hutt went to the charity strip to give the Jaguars their first lead of the game since the opening minute of the first half. Saints senior forward Precilla Hill sunk a layup and jumper to give the lead back to the Saints, 33-28, with a minute left before halftime. However, Hutt pounded the ball inside for a foul to cut the deficit down to30-33 heading into the locker room.
In the second half, the game got out of hand as the Saints went to work on building a comfortable lead. Sophomore guard Jasmine Kearse swiped the ball for a transition layup to give the Saints the first double-digit led of the evening, 43-33. By the 14:28 mark the Saints broke 50 points, and wouldn't let up.
With 7:40 remaining the Jaguars were down 61-40, and struggled to find any offensive rhythm for a comeback.
The Jaguars finished the match scoring 35.2 percent from the floor. For the second game in a row, newcomers Hutt and junior guard Camille Gee scored in double-figures with 14 points apiece.
The Jaguars return to play Saturday on the road against West Georgia, which is the beginning of a four-game road stretch. The remaining contest will be against Claflin (Nov. 1), Paine (Nov. 3) and Clark Atlanta (Nov. 13).
