Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – After the NABC coaches poll ranked the GRU Augusta men's basketball team No. 20 in the nation, the Jaguars came out Wednesday evening and hammered non-conference Valdosta State 92-61, in Christenberry Fieldhouse. It was the Jaguars (4-0) largest blowout of the season.
The Jaguars and Blazers (4-1) reunited in a clash of the undefeated, following a three year hiatus. In the two programs last meeting (Nov. 30, 2011), the Blazers got the best of the Jaguars in a close 60-56 win. However, head coach Dip Metress and the Jaguars showed the 2014-15 Blazers why it's not easy to visit Christenberry and come away with a win.
The Blazers got off to a 5-0 start In the opening minutes, but the Jaguars responded quickly with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Keshun Sherrill and a layup from freshman forward Vlad Cobzaru to help the team take an early lead.
The Jaguars nursed a three-point lead, until senior guard Devonte Thomas took matters into his own hands. Thomas started with a three-pointer, followed by a steal on the ensuing possession for a transition layup and intercepted another pass to find senior forward Henry McCarthy for a layup.
The quick spurt gave the Jaguars the first double-digit lead of the game, 22-11. Thomas scored 11 points alone in the first period, and hammered three of four three-pointers.
As the first period waned, the Blazers continued to miss shots to help the Jaguars extend their lead. GRU went to the locker room with a 19-point advantage, 42-23. During the first period the Jaguars were lights out from the floor, shooting at 61.5 percent. And the Blazers struggled to make a basket, shooting 34.5 percent from the field.
In second half the Jaguars kept their foot on the gas pedal. At the 16:11 mark, McCarthy caught a pass from freshman guard Keith Crump for a hook shoot to make the score 53-32. The Jaguars were able to keep the scoring margin over 20 points for the remainder of the contest. Senior guard D'Angelo Boyce canned a three-pointer to cap the game and give the Jaguars their fifth-straight victory.
It was the first game of the season the Jaguars scored over 90 points- the offense scored 59.3 from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. On the evening, four different players scored in double-figures; Sherrill paced team with 20, Devon Wright-Nelson dropped 17, Thomas put up 16 and Cobzaru notched 10.
The Jags hit the road for the first time this season for a four-game stint. Metress and the team play back-to-back games in North Carolina when they face Shaw in Raleigh, N.C., on Nov. 29 and Mount Olive on Nov. 30 in Mount Olive, N.C. December lifts off with an away game at cross-town rival Paine College on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The Jags travel their longest distance of the season with a trek to Bowie State on Dec. 6 in Bowie, Md.
