Men's Hoops Survives No. 19 UNC Pembroke, 57-55

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta sophomore guard Keshun Sherrill scored 13 of 20 points in the second half to will the Jaguars to a 57-55 victory over No. 19 ranked UNC Pembroke Wednesday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

With the win the Jags (15-5, 7-4 PBC) improve to 5-1 in their last six games and are 8-2 in Christenberry.

The Jags met UNCP (17-3, 8-3 PBC) on the road earlier in the season on Jan. 3, where the Braves won 82-76 in the English E. Jones Center. However, in the second meeting the Jags were in control for majority of the matchup and gained redemption from the previous defeat.

Down for the first time in the game with 1:28 to go, senior guard D'Angelo Boyce found Sherrill in the left corner for a three-pointer to reclaim the lead, 55-53.

Braves' senior forward Ben Jacobs sunk a layup to tie the game, but on the ensuing possession Sherrill drew contact and knocked down both clutch free throws to secure the victory with 0.8 seconds on the clock.

The Jags played lock down defense the entire night by holding the Braves to 40 percent shooting from the floor and 33.3 percent from downtown.

In the opening minutes the Jags got off to a hot start with a 7-0 run. Sherrill scored the first point on a deep two-pointer, and senior guard Devonte Thomas was able to convert a three-point play after taking a steal coast-to-coast to spark the early lead.

After the Jags grabbed an eight point advantage, the Braves' defense clamped down and brought the score to 12-8 in favor of the Jags with 11 minutes left in the half.

However, the Jags kept making spectacular plays to maintain the first half scoring lead.  Sherrill converted a three-point play off a circus layup. A few possessions later Thomas picked the pocket of junior guard Quamain Rose, and found D'Angleo Boyce in transition for a layup to bring the score to 19-8, which was the first double-digit lead of the match.

At the 1:24 mark, Boyce lobbed a pass to Michael Graham for an alley-oop for a 26-11 affair. The Jags were able to finish the first half with a 28-13 margin despite shooting 37 percent from the floor.

In the second half the Jags maintained a double-digit lead until Braves' wing player Cody Hughes connected on a three-pointer for a 10-point differential, and Rose would knock down a two to cut the score to 47-41.

The Braves were two points away from tying the match, after guard Griffin Pittman knocked down a trey. With 1:28 remaining, Jacobs complete an and-one play for a 53-51 Braves lead. But the big three-pointer from Sherrill allowed the Jags to earn a landmark win.

The Jags return to play with a PBC road contest against Clayton State on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3:30 p.m.
