Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta women's basketball team won back-to-back games for the first this season by defeating Peach Belt foe UNC Pembroke 55-47 on Wednesday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Kariel Hutt recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Camille Gee led the Jaguars and all scorers with 18 points.
In the first half both teams came out the gate struggling to get a shot off - GRU Augusta (4-14, 3-8 PBC) shot 21.4 percent and UNC Pembroke (6-11, 4-6 PBC) shot 37.9 percent from the floor. However, as things got going junior forward Mary Robinson came out strong on both ends of the court making the first five points for the Braves as well as exerting her energy on the defensive end.
GRU answered back as freshman guard Joshlyn Belcher and junior forward Kariel Hutt came out scoring for both to add eight points and help keep the Braves streak at bay.
With 1:26 left to play in the first half, the Braves sophomore guard Airico Williams made a layup to give the Braves a six point advantage over the Jags. With 23 seconds left to finish the first half Hutt went one for two at the free throw line to give the Braves only a five point advantage, 26-21.
In the opening minutes of the second half Guard Camille Gee made two out of three free throws to bring the Jags to a score of 23-26, the closest score since tipoff. Gee then hit a wide open three-pointer at the 13:05 mark to help the Jags reclaim the lead in the second half.
The Jags later caught fire as they went on a 9-3 run late in the second half bringing the lead to 34-41 with 9:22 left to play.
With less than three minutes to play, Hutt split her free throws and then made a jump shot with 2:29 left to play in the second half to bring the lead up to 10 to put the game out of reach and secure a victory for the Jags.
Hutt came up big in the game by recording her eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 rebounds and 13 points. Gee led the team with 18 points. The Braves won the rebounding battle, 47-33, but the Jags forced 16 turnovers while they only had five.
The Jags return to the road for a conference contest against Clayton State in Morrow Ga., on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3:30 p.m.
