Jags Down Rival USC Aiken, 88-69, For No. 1 Seed In PBC Tourney

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. - With a No. 1 seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on the line, the GRU Augusta men's basketball team blew out USC Aiken, 88-69, Wednesday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The 19-point victory also marked the Jaguars 11th consecutive win.

The conference contest was a blackout game televised live by WJBF News Channel 6. It was the second consecutive televised game for the Jaguars, with CBS Sports Network having nationally televised GRU's Salute to the Military game in 100 million homes on Feb. 21 for Military Appreciation Day.

Last time out against USC Aiken (13-15, 8-11 PBC) on Feb. 14, the Jags (23-5, 15-4 PBC) blew a 19-point first half lead, but withstood the comeback down the stretch to hold the Pacers for a 77-66 Peach Belt victory in the Convocation Center.

During the second meeting the Jags shot 61.8 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Four different players for the Jaguars scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Keshun Sherrill paced all scorers with 21 points and sophomore guard Keith Crump followed with 14 points and 11 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Senior guard Devonte Thomas notched 13 points and senior forward Devon Wright-Nelson posted 12.

Sherrill started hot and nailed back-to-back three pointers, after Wright-Nelson opened the scoring with a trey.

The Pacers couldn't stop the Jags interior offense as the team allowed 24 points in the paint to GRU. On defense, the Jags held the Pacers to 38.2 percent from the field.

In the opening minutes, the Pacers struck first behind a two-pointer from guard Arbry Butler, but Sherrill canned back-to-back three-pointer to spark an 11-2 run, and help the Jaguars quickly took control of the game.

At the 10 minute mark the Jags still maintained a nine point advantage, 24-15. However, senior guard D'Angelo Boyce knocked down two free throws to push the lead to 15, and Wright-Nelson sunk a hook shot for a 20-point differential, 39-19.

GRU's Crump drained a three-pointer from the top of key to beat the buzzer and give the Jags a 48-24 lead at intermission.

After the first 20 minutes, Sherrill led all scorers with 14 points, and Wright-Nelson had 11. The Jags shot 66.7 percent from the floor, and held the Pacers to 22.6 percent.

In the second half, the Jags kept their foot on the gas pedal. Sherrill drained another triple for a 52-27 lead. He finished the night 3-4 from three-point land.

Boyce hit a jump shot and found Thomas in the right corner for a three-pointer to push their lead to 71-48.

The Jags scored over 80 points behind a Crump jumper with 2:07 remaining, and put the game virtually out of reach.

The next time the Jags hit the court will be in the Peach Belt quarterfinals. The team is set to host Young Harris on Feb. 28 at 7:00 p.m., for the first round of the PBC tourney.
