Jags Split GRU Augusta Tri-Match

GRU falls to Montevallo Falcons and beats Belmont Abbey 3-0                                                                                                                                       

AUGUSTA, Ga.  – The Jaguar women's volleyball team hosted the GRU Augusta Tri-Match on Saturday, Sept. 19 and the Jags dropped a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference match against the Montevallo Falcons before taking care of Belmont Abbey in a 3-0 non-conference win in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Jaguars (7-2, 1-1 PBC) fell in a long five-set battle to Montevallo, but they responded in the night cap with a shutout win over the BAC Crusaders.

Jags junior Jordan Bickett began the day on serve and GRU took the opening point. In set one, UM led at 10-9 and 11-9 and back-to-back aces, but they tied it with Alyssa Latham on serve and on a Blair Bolton kill. A block and two kills gave the Jags the advantage, but the matched stayed tied until UM took a 22-20 lead. The Falcons held on for a 25-22 win in set one that had 11 tied scores.

A block from Savanna Gonzales in set two tied it at five all, but the Falcons stayed around for the rest of the set. GRU's JaNhea Beisner came in off the bench and stayed on serve to get GRU back in the match. GRU took a 22-19 lead and held on for a close 26-24 set win.

With the match tied at 1-1, the Jags fell 25-18 in the third set and were out-attacked .286 to .188. GRU produced a .500 attack percentage in the must-win fourth set and out-killed the Falcons 16-10. Set five was a close affair the entire set, but the Falcons outlasted GRU and took the day with a 15-12 win in set five.

Bickett led GRU with 12 kills and Katie Beresford posted 10 and Savanna Gonzales 11. Alyssa Latham led all players with 45 assists and added 12 digs. GRU recorded a better attack percentage across the match with a .260 clip to UM's .238, but the Falcons reduced errors and prevailed.

Belmont Abbey beat Montevallo 3-2 in the second neutral-site match.

In GRU's second match of the day against non-conference Belmont Abbey, the Crusaders led by as much as eight in set one. The Jags responded and took the opening set 26-24 – thanks to a .263 attack percentage.

BAC again won the opening pointing set point and went on a 3-0 run. GRU rattled off three straight and took the match into extra points. GRU endured and won their second 26-24 match in a row and took the third and final set 25-22.

Gonzales posted 13 kills and Rachel Windle provided 10 in the win along with 10 digs. The Jags hit .348 as a team in the match and held BAC to .255.

The Jaguars travel for their first conference road test on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Francis Marion in Florence, S.C.
