Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars moved to 10-2 on the year with their seventh straight win on Saturday afternoon, beating the UNC Pembroke Braves 72-61 in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Jags eclipsed their win total from the 2014-15 season with the victory that moved them to 10-2 and 3-0 in the Peach Belt Conference. Augusta started seniors Kariel Hutt, Lonna Turner, Samantha Carlson, and juniors Kayla Lovett and Breonna O'Conner for their first PBC home contest of the season.
Sophomore Joshlyn Belcher was two points shy of her career high and led all players with 22 points – sinking six three pointers. Hutt put up 13 and O'Conner 12. Hutt had four blocks and a steal and five rebounds and Cynara Pitt produced seven points, six rebounds, and two assists.
Augusta shot 48.2 percent from the floor and held the Braves to 41.7 percent. The Jags knocked down 9-of-15 free throws (60.0 percent) and held the Braves to 50.0 percent at the charity stripe.
The Braves (5-6, 0-3 PBC) made a three pointer to open scoring on the day, but the Jags quickly turned the score. O'Conner stole a pass at the top of the key and cruised the open floor for an easy layup to tie the game at 8-8. Senior Camille Gee drove the paint on the next possession to give Augusta their first lead of the day and sophomore Joshlyn Belcher canned back-to-back three pointers to push the advantage
Belcher hit her third three ball of the first half to put the Jags up by 10 to close the first period of play. Belcher had 12 off the bench in the first half, but UNCP cut the Jags' lead to 35-27 at halftime.
Augusta forced 11 turnovers in the first half and 16 total in the game.
O'Conner hit a three ball at the top of the arc to start the second half, but the Braves outscored the Jags 21-19 in the third and cut the deficit to 54-50 with 8:40 to go in the game. It was a five point game with five minutes to play when Belcher hit her fifth three ball of the game. Augusta held on for the 72-61 score to continue their streak in the win column.
Peach Belt Conference continues for the Jags as they host the Francis Marion Patriots on Monday, Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The men host the FMU Patriots at 7:30 p.m.
