Historic Season Ends in Sweet Sixteen

Box Score

Wingate, N.C. – The Augusta University Volleyball team fell to the Carson Newman Eagles 3-0 in the Southeast Region Championship match of the NCAA Tournament.

Augusta's season ends with a 29-9 record, while Carson-Newman advances to the Elite Eight with a 28-7 record.

Jessica Hedrick was a leader on both sides of the ball. In her last collegiate match, the senior from St. Louis, Mo. registered 10 kills and six blocks while hitting .421 on the night, all of which were team highs. Fellow senior Payton Murchie totaled 18 assists on the night while Holland Martin managed 19 digs in the contest.

In the first set, Augusta battled the Eagles hard. Although Carson-Newman led for most of the set, the Jags tied the match up at 22-22 late. Each side would trade points to 25-25 before the Eagles put up back-to-back scores to take the first set 27-25.

Despite a late lead of 24-17 in favor of the Eagles, the Jags pounced, putting up four unanswered points to pull within striking distance. Augusta came up short, dropping the second set 25-21, but built momentum that they could carry into the third set.

In the third stanza, both sides would trade scores for the first 12 points prior to Nedu Evans and Chloe Allen kicked off a string of three points with a solid block.

The lead of three wouldn't hold for long as the Eagles battled the Jags hard throughout the middle of the set. The Jags stayed ahead of their opponents though, save for a brief tie at 13-13.

Hedrick and Nicolette Ramos notched back-to-back kills to give Augusta a four point edge at 18-14. Carson-Newman chipped away at the Jag lead, making it a 22-20 set late.

Augusta couldn't hold the Eagles back, as Carson Newman ended the match with a 25-23 win in the third.

The 2019 squad went further than any other team in the program's history, winning 29 matches on the year, capturing a second straight Peach Belt Tournament Title and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time ever.

The Jags will return to Augusta with high expectations for the next season.
