Augusta Drops Tight Road Contest to Wingate

Wingate, NC- The Augusta University women's basketball team was unable to stave off Wingate's late run and fell to the Bulldogs 68-63 on the road. Augusta moves to 6-2 on the season while Wingate improves to 7-1.
Augusta shot 34 percent from the field and 32 percent from three-point range. Augusta also scored 16 points off of 17 Wingate turnovers, carding nine steals for the night.

STANDOUTS

November Morton carded a season-best 23 points. Including five made buckets from beyond the arc. Fellow guard Zairya West tallied 14 points and 6 rebounds to go along with 2 steals. Kennedi Manning led the rebounding effort with 10. The junior also had a game-high 5 blocks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

Augusta led 8-4 after the first five minutes. The two sides traded baskets for the rest of the period; the two were tied at 14 at the end of the first. A made layup by Kennedi Manning opened scoring in the second quarter and started an 8-0 run for AU. Wingate answered with a 9-2 run of its own, tying the score at 26 points with five minutes left in the first half. A three-pointer by November Morton gave the Jags a slight 36-35 lead heading to the locker room at night.
 
Wingate scored the first two baskets of the second half, but a jumper by Zairya West gave the Jaguars a 45-43 lead midway through the quarter. The Jaguars went on a 7-2 run over the final 3:20, taking a five-point lead into the final frame.
 
Two consecutive threes by Morton gave Augusta a nine-point lead. A 10-0 run by the home team in the final four minutes of the contest notched the game at 63 with 57 seconds left in the game. A foul by Kennedi Manning sent the Bulldogs to the free-throw line which gave them a two point lead. Wingate scored its final five points from the charity stripe and bested the visiting Jaguars 68-63.
 
Augusta will return home to Christenberry Fieldhuose on Monday Dec 13th for the Augusta City Classic vs Paine College at 5:30pm.
