WINGATE, N.C. - The Augusta University Women's volleyball team dropped a five-set battle to Flagler College on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Jaguars (25-8) close the season as PBC Regular Season Champions. The 2022 NCAA tournament appearance is the fifth tournament appearance in school history.
Augusta was led by PBC Player of the Year Jazmine Wheeler and what has become her signature double-double. Wheeler anchored both the offense and defense, turning in 16 kills and 15 digs. Kayli Cleaver had 13 kills. Madelyn Eden and Alexis Diaz-Infante both had 11 kills.
Defensively, Dariana Luna had 15 digs and Kiera Barr had 12.
Samantha Zittrauer dished 42 assists in the five-set match.
The Augusta offense struggled to find its rhythm in the first set, finding themselves down 22-15. Never able to regain momentum, the Jags would fall 25-20 in the opening set
The second set saw Flagler jump out to a 15-11 lead. Two services aces from Kiera Barr and a put-away overpass from Alexis-Diaz-Infante brought the score to 14-16. Strong offense from the Saints put the No. 6 seed ahead 20-15 and forced and AU timeout. Two kills from Kayli Cleaver cut the lead to three, but Flagler would win 25-22.
Both teams traded points for the first 15 points of the match. Flagler opened a three point lead before a kill and block from freshman Katie Callenberger help tie the game 10-10. A massive block by Jazmyn Wheeler gave Augusta its first lead of the set and forced a Flagler timeout. Wheeler came alive in the third, fueling Augusta to a 28-26 set three victory.
Augusta got off to a string start in the fourth set, leading 6-2 and forcing Flagler to take an early timeout. AU was squarely in control of the fourth set, winning 25-17 and forcing a fifth and deciding set.
Flagler opened a 3-0 lead before Madelyn Eden blasted home three kills to even the match. The Saints wouldn't go on a 3-0 run, switching sides up 8-4. AU was unable to re-gain the lead, falling 15-7 in the final set.
