AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team took two narrow losses to rival USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon. After dropping the first game 8-6, the Jags lost 3-2 in extra innings in the final game of the series. AU moves to 11-23 overall while USC Aiken moves to 17-19.
Augusta will travel to Erskine on Tuesday April 12
th before hosting Anderson this Wednesday April 13
th for a single contest.
GAME 1
Despite a six-run deficit in the ninth inning, the Jaguars almost worked their way back into the game, eventually falling 8-6 in the second game of the series.
Augusta scored two runs in the third from bases-loaded walks, putting the score at 5-2.
AU tallied four runs in the ninth inning, but were unable to mount the comeback.
Skylor Murphy led offensively, going 3-for-4 with 1 RBI.
Dominique Canale started on the mound for Augusta and tossed for 2.0 innings before he was replaced by
Eli McMullen (4 innings) and Cody Sheider (3 innings)
GAME 2
Augusta struck fist when
Ben Markiewicz doubled to center field sending
Pat Galvin over home plate in the first inning. The Jags were able to tack on another run in the first when Markiewicz scored on a wild pitch.
The Pacers scored a single run in the second and then another in the 5
th off a sacrifice fly, tying the game. Both teams were knotted at 2 runs at the end of the scheduled 7 innings, pushing the game to an eighth and deciding extra stanza.
Aiken's Graves hit an RBI single with 2 outs to add the final run and secure the win for the Pacers.
Ben Markiewicz,
Walker Sinclair,
Lukas Coker, and
Skylor Murphy all registered hits for Augusta.
Harrison Aulds was 2-for-3. Markiewicz was 1-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.
Mason Bernard (1-5) tossed all eight innings on the mound for Augusta. He struck out five batters and allowed ten hits in his full game of work.
