GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Augusta University women's volleyball claimed its second consecutive Peach Belt Regular Season Championship with a 3-0 sweep of top-ranked Lander on the road. After winning games on both Thursday and Friday, Augusta will host the 2023 PBC Championship semifinals and finals Nov 17-18.
Augusta ends the regular season 25-4, 10-1 PBC headed into the conference tournament next week. With the loss, Lander moves to 26-5, 10-2 in conference play.
Sharon Quarles squad was led by
Jazmyn Wheeler's 12 kills and eight digs. Sophomore Kaylie Cleaver added 10 kills and three blocks to the offense.
Madelyn Eden tallied seven kills and six total blocks.
Savannah Davis rejected five shots at the net.
Senior
Dariana Luna anchored the defense with 24 digs in the three-set match.
Ally Thees added 10 digs.
Setter
Janvier Buggs dished 33 assists to go along with 11 digs, two blocks, and a service ace.
Lander was led by Katie Miller's 12 kills.
Augusta started the match off red-hot, taking a 9-3 lead in the first set and forcing a Lander timeout. The Jags would cruise to an easy 25-16 victory. The second set proved to be a back-and-forth battle between the two Southeast region heavyweights. Knotted at 18-18, Lander would rattle off three consecutive points to take a late lead in the set. A kill from Wheeler then a block from Wheeler and Eden forced a Lander timeout at 22-22. Three consecutive kills from Wheeler and Eden sealed the set for Augusta.
The third and final set saw the Jaguars extend the lead to 14-7. The Bearcats would fight their way back into the set, shrinking the AU lead to two points but the Jags would hold steady to sweep the No. 1 ranked team in the Southeast Region.
