WINGATE, N.C. - The Augusta University Women's volleyball team fell in three sets to Anderson Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Southeast Regional final.
Jazmyn Wheeler,
Sophia Kruczko, and
Janvier Buggs were all named All-Tournament. The Jaguars (29-5) close the season as PBC Regular Season Champions and PBC Tournament Champions. The 2023 NCAA tournament appearance is the sixth tournament appearance in school history.
Augusta was led by
Sophia Kruczko's 10 kills and two blocks.
Madelyn Eden and two-time PBC Player of the Year
Jazmyn Wheeler each added six kills to the stat sheet.
Kayli Cleaver and
Janvier Buggs each tallied 4 kills while
Jada Suguturaga had 3 kills and five blocks.
Defensively, Wheeler led AU with 14 digs. Senior
Dariana Luna had 13 digs in the match. Setter Javier Buggs dished 23 assists.
Both teams seemed evenly matched in the first set, with neither leading by more than two points in the stanza. Tied 23-23, a kill from Buggs gave Augusta set-point, but Anderson would answer with back-to-back kills to win 27-25.
Augusta struggled to get going in the second set, finding themselves down 7-1 early. The Jaguars were never able to recover fully, falling 25-15 in the second stanza.
Anderson jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the third and final set. Augusta used an 8-2 scoring run to take its first lead of the match, but Anderson would prevail 25-22.
