Jaguars Open The Season With An 11-2 Win

CAROLLTON, Ga- The Augusta university baseball team opened the 2023 season with an 11-2 win before falling in the second game of the day to West Georgia. Augusta (1-1) wraps the three game series against the Wolves on Sunday.

"Proud of the way the guys played in Game 1 today, said Head Coach Chris Howell. "Quality start from senior pitcher Mason Bernard. We were aggressive offensively and took care of the baseball. Game 2 didn't go our way but look forward to Game 3 tomorrow at 1pm

Game One: Augusta 11, UWG 2

Augusta got on the board in the very first inning following a two RBI single by Jordan Wilkie and held the 2-0 lead until the sixth inning.

Augusta added five insurance runs in the sixth  after the first three batters of the inning reached base, including a two run home run by Harrison Aulds. After a hit by pitch and a single from Kyle Lodise that forced a pitching change, Koby Ayala's sac fly pushed the score to 7-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Wolves answered  in the bottom of the seventh, capitalizing on a wild pitch for a single run.

Augusta immediately responded with two runs in the eighth inning off Lodise and Ayala singles. Jordan Wilkie hit a 2 RBI homer in in the ninth inning, effectively ending any chances the Wolves had of getting back into the game and giving Augusta the 11-2 victory.

Mason Bernard (1-0) was the winning pitcher for AU. Bernard allowed three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out five. Jasper Dubberly and Aedan Cates entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Jordan Wilkie, Kyle Lodise, and Kyle LaRoche each turned in three hits to lead Augusta. Parker Ingram and Harrison Aulds were both 2-for-5 with one run.

Game Two: UWG 12, Augusta 5
Just as they did in the first game, the Jaguars jumped out to an early lead after a leadoff walk came around to score on a sac fly from Pat Galvin.

In the bottom of the first inning, West Georgia tied things up with a sac fly that scored one run.

University of West Georgia pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning, but AU tallied four runs in the sixth inning. The Jaguars big bats were led by Parker Ingram, Harrison Aulds, and Kyle LaRoche, all driving in runs in the inning.

West Georgia tacked on six runs in a huge sixth inning, cementing the 12-5 Jaguar loss to the Wolves.

Britt Kelly took the loss for Augusta, allowing five hits and four runs over two innings, striking out one. Brian Trepanier pitched 3 innings in relief before he was replaced by Logan Howell for 0.1 innings and Turner Sircy for 0.2 innings.
