Box Score STATESBORO, GA. - A year after beating Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse, Augusta Univeristy pushed the Eagles Monday night only to come up short 79-69 in an exhibition game for the Jaguars.
The Jags had four guys hit for double figures led by freshman Elías Pálsson, who scored 19 points, on 5 of 9 shooting.
Maximillian Amadasun and
Demitri Gardner both had 15 points and
John St. Germain III added 11 in the loss.
Augusta was right with Georgia Southern for most of the first half including holding the lead for portions of the half. A late 9-0 run by the Eagles turned a 30-30 game into a lead for GSU as they would eventually go to the locker room up 39-32.
In the second haf, the Eagles would hold the lead the entire 20 minutes but could never extend it beyond 13 points. With just under two minutes to go in the game, the Jags had a chance to cut the lead to six, but St. Germain III's leg gave out from him on a layup attempt and the Eagles would score in transition to extend the lead back to 10. The Jaguars went through a couple of scoreless droughts in the half, but defensively were able to hold their own and never let GSU run away on the scoreboard.
One of the big stats that jumped off the score sheet was Georgia Southern's bench outscoring Augusta's 48-4. For the game, Augusta shot 39.7% while GSU hit on 42.9% of their shots. The Jags were 15 of 22 from the free throw line and just 4 of 18 from beyond the three point arc. Georgia Southern made 8 of their 27 three's.
Amadasun led AU with nine rebounds while St. Germain III dished out four assists.
Augusta University will play their first home game of the year Sunday when they host Florida Southern College at 2 p.m. Admission for the game is free as all fans are welcome to attend.
