AUGUSTA, GA - After a sluggish opening quarter, the Augusta women steamrolled past Newberry 61-34 to improve to 3-0 to start the season. The Jaguars dominated pretty much every category and had a balanced scoring attack in pulling away from the Wolves in the final three quarters.
Tyasia Freeman tallied a game high 12 points while
Je'Bria Fullwood added 11 in the victory.
Newberry actually led 14-10 after the opening quarter before the Jags outscored the Wolves 20-6 in the second. A Freeman layup midway through the quarter gave AU the lead as they would never look back.
Autumn Phillips would sink a couple of three pointers in the run as they not only found their shooting touch, but caused Newberry to turn the ball over several times.
AU would only add to the lead in the third and would lead by 30 at one point in the second half. Besides Freeman and Fullwood scoring in double figures,
Mone Florence added eight points and
Brianna Meekins finished with six points.
The Jaguars dominated the rebounding category 48-28 and almost had as many offensive boards (22) that Newberry finished with total rebounds. AU also held the Wolves to just 31.9% shooting and scored 42 of their 61 points in the paint.
Quinasia Abercrombie led the rebounding category with eight. Fullwood added seven with
Amari Jackson registering six. Phillips dished out a team leading four assists on the game.
The Jaguars hit the road Saturday, Nov. 16 when they travel to Fayetteville State for a 2 p.m. contest.
