MONTEVALLO, AL. – The Augusta University Jaguars split their matches in Saturday's action at the Central State Bank Arena, winning their first match against Mississippi College before falling to the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) in the second match.
Game 1: Augusta 3, Mississippi College 1
In their first match of the day, Augusta bounced back from a slow start to defeat Mississippi College 3-1. After dropping the first set 18-25, the Jaguars rallied to take the next three sets 25-21, 25-21, and 25-9 to secure the victory.
Marin Freeland led Augusta's offense with 13 kills, hitting an efficient .407 for the match. Mikayla Kline also had a standout performance with 12 kills, hitting .370, while Layne Witherspoon contributed 12 kills and hit .333. Jada Suguturaga added 8 kills with a .313 hitting percentage and led the team with 2 blocks. Janvier Buggs orchestrated the offense with 22 assists, and Rylie Harris anchored the defense with 13 digs.
Overall, Augusta hit .301 for the match with 56 kills and 15 errors on 136 total attacks, while Mississippi College hit .165 with 47 kills and 24 errors on 139 attacks.
Game 2: UAH 3, Augusta 1
In the second match, Augusta faced a tough opponent in the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) and ultimately fell 3-1. The Jaguars took the second set 25-14, but UAH secured the victory by winning the first, third, and fourth sets with scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-23, respectively.
Witherspoon once again led the Jaguars with 10 kills, whileSuguturaga added 7 kills and 7 blocks. Marin Freeland also contributed with 9 kills. Defensively, Giulia Rodrigues recorded a team-high 25 digs, and Buggs contributed 22 assists.
Augusta hit .106 for the match with 47 kills and 31 errors on 151 total attacks, while UAH posted a .075 hitting percentage with 44 kills and 32 errors on 159 attacks.
