Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. – The Augusta University Jaguars took a five-set victory over No. 14-ranked Lewis University on Saturday morning before dropping host Florida Southern 3-1 to close out the tournament. With the wins, Augusta improved to 3-0 on the season.
GAME 1 - Augusta 3 Lewis 2
Sophia Kruczko led the Jaguars' offense with 15 kills, hitting .286 for the match.
Jada Suguturaga added 12 kills with a .297 hitting percentage, while
Marin Freeland contributed 14 kills.
Madelyn Eden was a force at the net, tallying 8 kills and a team-high 7 blocks.
Janvier Buggs dished out 26 assists and 17 digs, while
Giulia Rodrigues anchored the defense with 28 digs.
In the opening set, Augusta came out strong, hitting .349 as a team. Key kills from Kruczko and Suguturaga helped the Jaguars secure the first set 25-21. The second set saw Lewis fight back, edging Augusta 25-22 to tie the match at one set apiece.
The third set was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging points throughout. Augusta managed to pull away late, winning the set 25-22 behind the steady play of Freeland and Eden. However, Lewis responded in the fourth set, taking advantage of Augusta's errors to win 25-16 and force a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, both teams battled fiercely, with multiple lead changes. Augusta ultimately prevailed, winning 16-14 thanks to a strong defensive effort and timely kills from Kruczko and Suguturaga, securing the 3-2 victory.
Overall, Augusta hit .179 for the match with 62 kills, 25 errors, and 207 total attacks, while Lewis hit .164 with 60 kills, 28 errors, and 195 attacks. Augusta also out-blocked Lewis with 26 total blocks compared to 16 for the Flyers.
GAME 2 - Augusta 3 Florida Southern 1
The Jags completed a tournament sweep in their final game of the day, handing Florida Southern their first loss of the season. Jacklyn Simms led the Jaguars with 13 kills, while Jada Suguturaga added 6 kills with an impressive .455 hitting percentage. Freeland added 8 kills, and Eden played a pivotal role at the net with eight total blocks. Buggs turned in 20 assists and had 10 digs, while Rodrigues tallied 23 digs.
In the first set, Augusta edged out Florida Southern 25-22, as Simms and Freeland led the offense with key kills. The Jaguars took control in the second set, cruising to a dominant 25-10 win with a .212 hitting percentage while holding the Mocs to a negative hitting percentage.
Florida Southern responded in the third set, capitalizing on Augusta's errors to win 25-23, keeping the match alive. However, Augusta bounced back in the fourth set, maintaining their composure and sealing the match with a 25-21 victory.
