AUGUSTA, GA-
Quinasia Abercrombie's last second shot gave Augusta a 70-68 win over Flagler at Christenberry Fieldhouse. With the win, the Jaguars are now 4-1 in Peach Belt Conference play and 12-3 overall. The Saints fall to 2-3 in conference and 6-8 overall.
The fourth quarter proved to be a back and forth affair as Flagler would take their first lead of the half with 6:20 to play. Down 62-56 with 4:30 left, Augusta rattled off eight straight points on baskets by
Je'Bria Fullwood,
Elyse Autrey,
Autumn Phillips and Abercrombie, to retake the lead. With 1:33 left, Abercrombie, who scored a career high 21 points, would give AU a 68-65 lead. But the Saints would not go down quietly and tied the score at 68 on a pair of free throws with :28 to play. Augusta would get possession as Autrey dove to the floor for a loose ball and called timeout with just over two seconds to play. Then, Phillips threw the perfect pass towards the basket that Abercrombie caught and made the lay-in with just .4 left. Flagler was unable to get a shot off on their last possession.
Besides the big game from the freshman Abercrombie, it was another freshman, Autrey, also coming up big. She scored 18 points and came up with a pair of steals.
The Jaguars shot 50% for the game while the Saints connected on 40% of their shots. Flagler actually out rebound the Jags by two. Led by Autrey's big effort the AU bench outscored the Saints 32-21.
Augusta returns to action Saturday night, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. when they host Georgia Southwestern.Â
