Augusta, Ga. - In an overtime thriller, Catawba came to Christenberry Fieldhouse and handed the Augusta women their first loss of the year, 80-79 in overtime. The Jaguars are now 2-1 while the Indians improve to 2-1.
Elyse Autrey led AU with 24 points while
Quinasia Abercrombie and
Chloe Ross each had 14 points.
Augusta led most of the game, but in the fourth quarter, Catawba would rally to tie it at 63 all with just over four minutes to play. The game would then go back and forth with Autrey giving the Jaguars a one point lead with just :53 left in regulation. The Indians would retake the lead, but Autrey would go to the line with :16 left and tied the game at 69 to force overtime.
In the extra period, Catawba scored the first four points before Augusta fought back. Down 73-69, it would be Autrey again doing damage from the foul line as she was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws. Then, with 2:26 to play and the Jags down three,
Cierra McGinlay would hit a clutch three-pointer knotting the game at 75. The Indians would score five of the next seven points to take an 80-76 lead. Autrey would hit a jumper with :24 to play to get within two points. Then, as time expired, one last Jaguar shot was off the mark as Catawba picked up the victory.
The Jaguars shot 44.3% from the field while the Indians connected on 43.9% of their shots. Catawba did make two more three-points than Augusta and four more free throws. The Jaguars did dominate the rebounding category, 47-27.
Ross, making her first start of the year, had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Autrey finished with seven rebounds and dished out five assists while Abercrombie had eight rebounds.
Sierra Burns added eight points.
Augusta will next be in action Sunday at 5 p.m. when they host Livingstone College.
