Beaufort, S.C. - The Augusta men's basketball team shot just 35% from the field and never led in the game as they fell 80-60 to USC Beaufort Wednesday night on the road. The Jaguars are now 2-1 in Peach Belt Conference play and 6-6 overall. The Sand Sharks improve to 1-2 in conference play and 7-3 overall.
Augusta managed just seven points in the first 12 minutes and fell behind 21-7 and were never able to recover. AU did make a run early in the second half and after made baskets by
Luis Nonfon and
Charlie McBeath, they trailed just 33-29. But a 13-2 run by USCB would give them a lead that would never be challenged.
McBeath led Augusta with a game high 17 points and eight rebounds while Nonfon added 15 points and six boards.
For the game the Jaguars shot just 35% while the Sand Sharks shot 45% and hit 11 of 26 three pointers. AU made just 3 of 14 from beyond the arc. The Sand Sharks also held a 40-36 rebound advantage and forced 18 turnovers.Â
McBeath and Nonfon were the only Augusta players in double figures.Â
Elías Pálsson tallied eight points while
Camryn Pacheco had five.Â
USC Beaufort scored the first 12 points of the game and were led by a balanced scoring attack that saw four players hit for double figures.Â
The Jaguars will return to Christenberry Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon when they host Georgia College with tip-off schedulled for 3:30 p.m.
