Softball Sweeps Newberry in Nonconference Doubleheader

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University softball picked up two nonconference wins at home on Tuesday, defeating Newberry 1-0 and 12-7 at Jaguar Field. The Jaguars move to 25-23 overall following the doubleheader sweep.

Game 1: Augusta 1, Newberry 0
Madalyn Spinks improved to 8-7 after tossing seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out six. She worked out of back-to-back jams in the second and third innings and stranded two runners in scoring position in the fifth to preserve the shutout.

Augusta broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. Bailee Roberts and Cadance Winder reached on a pair of singles, and with two outs, a ground ball to short was misplayed, allowing Roberts to score from third for the game's only run.

The Jaguars recorded five hits and played error-free defense. Roberts went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, while Sam Tener, Ayellad Howard, Kaylynn Scaffe, and Chesney Miles each added a hit. Spinks retired the final five batters of the game in order to seal the win.

Game 2: Augusta 12, Newberry 7

Augusta jumped ahead early and poured on the offense with 14 hits and 12 runs. Peyton Terrell led the way at the plate and in the circle, going 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, a sacrifice fly, and five RBIs. She also earned the win in the circle, allowing one earned run over 5.2 innings.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Augusta answered immediately. Tener reached on an error, and back-to-back hits from Roberts and Winder drove in two runs to give the Jaguars the lead.

In the third, Augusta capitalized on a fielding error, a sacrifice fly from Terrell, and an RBI single from Nevaeh Ross to extend the lead to 5-1. The fourth inning broke the game open — Winder delivered an RBI single, Bailey laid down a perfect bunt for another run, and Terrell followed with a three-run home run to make it 10-1.

Newberry responded with a two-run homer in the fifth and a grand slam in the sixth, cutting the lead to 10-7. Augusta added insurance in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Roberts and an RBI single from Terrell.

Roberts finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored, and Winder went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Howard went 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Bailey added two hits and two RBIs. Gibson threw the final 1.1 innings in relief.
