AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over Coker University on Tuesday afternoon at the Newman Tennis Center. With the win, the Jaguars improve to 2-2 on the season and have not yet begun Peach Belt Conference play.
Coker took the doubles point by sweeping all three courts. Humberto Pinto and Alejandro Carbonell fell 3-6 at No. 1 doubles, while David Perret and Arthur Valette dropped a 3-6 decision at No. 2. Alexis Bailhache and Tommy Matsumine also came up short, 3-6, at No. 3 doubles.
Augusta responded in singles play, winning four matches to secure the team victory. Valette earned a three-set win at No. 2 singles, defeating Lucas Melone 6-4, 7-6, 6-1. Bailhache followed with a hard-fought three-set victory at No. 3, winning 6-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Pinto added another point at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 7-6, 0-4 win, while Enzo Sakiyama clinched the match for the Jaguars with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 6.
Coker picked up singles wins at No. 1 and No. 4 to keep the match close. Perret dropped a three-set battle at No. 1, while Matsumine fell in straight sets at No. 4.
Next up: Augusta will travel to Charleston, S.C. to face Division I opponent Campbell on Saturday, Feb. 22. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
