WINGATE, N.C. --
Kurie Washington scored a career-high 20 points to lead 13th-ranked
Wingate past Augusta State 90-76 Saturday evening in the
OrthoCarolina Classic at Cuddy Arena. With the win, the Lady
Bulldogs improved to 4-1 while ASU dropped to 1-2.
Junior guard Jasmine Godwin came off the bench to pace the Lady
Jaguars with 19 points. Nicole Mealing, Porsha White and Kenisha
Sheppard each tallied 14 points each for ASU while White grabbed a
game-high 13 rebounds.
Wingate's Anna Atkinson booked a double-double with 12 points
and 10 assists. Stacie Rhodes and Sarah Rosser added 12 and 11
points, respectively, for the hosts.
A jumper from Mealing gave ASU a 20-18 lead at the 10:38 mark of
the first half. Wingate responded with an 8-0 run to take a 26-20
advantage, capped by a jumper from Washington with eight minutes to
go in the first half. ASU stayed close, as a 3-pointer from Mealing
pulled the Lady Jags within 30-25 at the 6:51 mark.
Wingate answered with another 8-0 spurt and a Rosser jumper gave
Wingate a 38-25 lead with 4:19 left in the half. Washington canned
a trey at 1:07 mark to increase the Wingate lead to 41-29. Mealing
hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to pull ASU within 41-32
before Wingate pushed the lead back to 11 with a basket at the
buzzer.
ASU got within eight on a layup from White four minutes into the
second half. The Lady Bulldogs countered with a 12-2 run and
assumed a commanding 62-44 lead. ASU cut its deficit to 12 on a
Godwin tip-in with 5:49 left, but got no closer the rest of the
way.
Wingate shot 40.3 percent from the field, including five-of-14
shooting from 3-point range. The Lady Bulldogs racked up 35 points
off of 27 Lady Jag turnovers, while recording 12 steals. ASU also
shot 40.3 percent from the field (27-of-67) and won the rebounding
battle 46-43.
The Lady Jags travel to Newberry, S.C., to take on Newberry on
Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
