CARROLLTON, Ga. -- Augusta State junior forward
Fred Brathwaite hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to
force overtime and the No. 4 Jaguars outscored West Georgia 16-7 in
the extra period to claim an 89-80 non-conference victory Tuesday
night in the HPC Center.
In a contest that featured 10 ties and 18 lead changes, ASU trailed
by four with 29 seconds left in regulation after Deion Sims canned
a pair of free throws to give the Wolves a 73-69 lead. A Siler
layup 11 seconds later got the Jags within 73-71 and then senior
guard Steve Smith stole the UWG inbounds pass. Brathwaite was
fouled on a drive to the basket, and he converted both free throws
to pull the Jags even at 73-all
Sims' game-winning attempt with two seconds to go was off the
mark, and then ASU took the lead for good on Siler's layup 15
seconds into overtime. Sophomore guard Caleb Brown converted a
three-point play and a Brathwaite layup and 3-pointer put the Jags
ahead 84-76 with 1:21 remaining.
