BOWIE, Md. – Augusta State's Daniel
Dixon drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 15 seconds left and the
10th-ranked Jaguars survived two game-tying attempts from Bowie
State in the final seconds to escape A.C. Jordan Arena with a 75-72
non-conference road victory Saturday night.
With the win, ASU moved to 5-1 on the season and matched by the
best start by a Jaguar squad since the 1976-77 season. The Jags
also improved to 3-0 on the road this season and to 5-1 over the
last three seasons against CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association) opponents.
Junior guard Ben Madgen booked a game-high 18 points for ASU and
added six rebounds. Junior forward Fred Brathwaite netted 17
points, while Dixon registered 15 points on five treys and five
assists. Sophomore reserve guard Caleb Brown turned in his third
double-figure scoring effort in the first six games with a
career-best 12 points and junior forward Greg Hire grabbed a
team-high nine rebounds. Senior center Garret Siler was limited to
eight points in only 18 minutes before fouling out.
Armond Hill paced Bowie State (5-5) with 18 points off the bench
while Tennessee transfer Duke Crews, who had not appeared in the
Bulldogs' first nine games, had 17 points, nine rebounds and
two blocks in his first action of the season.
ASU shot 50 percent in the first half and used a 17-4 run midway
through the opening stanza to build a 44-22 halftime lead. The
Jags, who hit a season-high 10 3-pointers – including seven
in the first half -- pushed their lead to as many as 24 on two
occasions in the early stages of the second half, the latter on a
Siler layup at the 15:45 mark.
ASU still owned a 70-55 lead after a Siler dunk with just 4:57 to
play before Bowie caught fire, rattling off 14 straight points over
the next 3:13. Hill's pair of free throws pulled the Bulldogs
within 70-69 with 1:44 remaining.
Braithwaite countered with two free throws to put ASU ahead 72-69
with 50 seconds left. On Bowie's next possession,
Hill's layup and free throw tied the game at 72-all with 43
seconds to go.
The Jags will break for the holidays before returning on Dec. 29 in
The Moretz Sports Classic in Hickory, N.C. The tourney, hosted by
Lenoir-Rhyne College, will pit ASU against No. 9 Catawba on Monday,
Dec. 29 at 4:00 p.m. The Jags will take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday,
Dec. 30 at 4:00 p.m.
