-- Georgia College & State jumped out to a
double-digit, first-half lead and went on to an 82-69 Peach Belt
Conference victory over Augusta State Saturday afternoon in the
Centennial Center.
The loss dropped the Lady Jags to 5-13 overall and 3-8 in the PBC.
GCSU improved to 13-5 and 8-3 in the league.
Junior guard Brittany Jarrard paced ASU with a game-high 20 points.
Senior forward Tracey Paschal had 13 points, while junior forward
Nicole Mealing booked her seventh double-double of the season with
12 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmine Godwin chipped in 11 points for
the Lady Jags, who shot just 37.5 percent from the field.
Tiauuna Brantley and Daniela Nopuente booked 14 each for the Lady
Bobcats, while Antoinette Reames and Dominique Huffin managed 12
each. Shandrea Moore handed out five assists and Reames posted four
blocked shots and three steals.
The 82 points marked a season-high point total for GCSU, which
connected on nine 3-pointers and got 31 points from its bench.
ASU jumped ahead 5-0 and led 8-6 before a Nopuente 3-pointer gave
the Lady Bobcats their first lead -- a 9-8 advantage -- at the
13:03 mark.
A 7-0 spurt by the hosts pushed the lead to double digits with 1:59
left in the first half and Emily Bixler's trey with five
seconds left pushed the GCSU lead to 43-31 at the half.
The Lady Bobcats scored nine straight to open the second half and
led by as much as 23 on three separate occasions, the last with
4:36 to play following a trey by Nopuente.
The contest marked the first leg in a three-game road trip for the
Lady Jags, who face Columbus State in the Lumpkin Center on Monday,
Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
