AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Augusta State shot 58 percent in the second half Sunday
afternoon and pulled away for a 79-57 non-conference victory over
West Georgia in the season opener for both teams in Christenberry
Fieldhouse.
Senior guard/forward Fred Brathwaite paced the Jaguars with 19
points and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior forward Alex Smith,
making his ASU debut, booked 18 points and eight rebounds and
senior guard Ben Madgen notched 17 points and five boards.
Senior point guard Daniel Dixon registered the first double-double
of his career, tallying 10 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and
four steals.
Vojin Svilar led the Wolves (0-1) with 18 points, draining 4-of-7
3-pointers. Jeremy Smith and Gavin Field netted 12 and 11 points
each.
Madgen moved into fourth place on the Peach Belt Conference's
career scoring list with 1,687 points, overtaking Rosendo Bryden of
UNC Pembroke (1992-96) for fourth place all-time (1,672).
The victory also marked the 250th win in the 14-year career of head
coach Dip Metress, who improved to 116-43 in his ASU tenure. The
victory was the 14th consecutive home win for the Jags dating back
to last season.
ASU led 33-20 at the half despite just 34.3 percent shooting in the
opening 20 minutes. The Jags outrebounded the Wolves 44-20 and
outscored UWG 36-22 in the paint.
ASU travels to Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, Nov. 21 to take on
Benedict in a non-conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
